Part of our vision at PCUMC is to nurture children and youth. We focus on little ones because we know that they matter to Jesus, who said, "Let the little children come to me,"(Mark 10:14) and challenged his disciples to "have faith like a child" (Matthew 18:3). I have experienced first hand how having a supportive community and falling in love with Jesus as a young person can change the course of a life and shape a future for the better. I have also seen all the ways that young people change us, our communities and our world for the better. Here are four awesome ways you can nurture the next generation:
1) Camp for a Child at Pine Ridge
In June a group of adults from our church spent a week serving at Pine Ridge reservation, one of the poorest communities on earth. We can continue to support this community by helping the children go away to camp at the end of the summer. The cost of camp is $70 per child, and our goal is to sponsor as many children as possible. You can bring your contribution on Sunday or give online here.
2) Vacation Bible School
VBS kicks off this Sunday night July 10th, and it is not too late to get involved! Just click here to register online as a participant or a volunteer. And don't forget to join for decorating and set-up fun on Saturday from 11am-2pm.
3) Heartland Day Camp
We still need lots of helpers, including assistant counselors, story readers, craft leaders and more. Whether you can help for an hour, or help all week this is an wonderful opportunity to show Christ's love to the kids of our community. Contact Robbin to get involved as a volunteer and register your kids for camp here.
4) Strong Families
This enrichment program provides dinner, parenting classes and children's programming for families in need in our community who are referred through social services and Hillcrest. You can volunteer to help with the food, provide kids programs, mentor youth, and sit in as family advocate to build relationships. To get involved contact Pastor Katie.
Remember, children and youth aren't just our future... they are our present, because they matter to God right now. Thank you for being a community that reflects God's love and cares so much about loving young people.
